The Truth Behind Quang Duong's Sudden 'Signing' with the APP Tour

by Alex E. Weaver on

Quang Duong's sudden move to the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) has left the pickleball community scrambling to understand what actually happened.

Was it a signing? A non-exclusive deal? And what does it mean for the future of professional pickleball tours?

We sat down with Duc, QD's father and manager, to get the real story behind the headlines and the business decisions that are reshaping the sport.

The Non-Exclusive Deal That Confused Everyone

Here's where the confusion starts: QD didn't sign an exclusive contract with the APP.

That's a huge distinction that got lost in the initial announcements and social media chatter. Duc explained that the deal allows QD to maintain flexibility, which is actually a smart negotiating position in a landscape where two major domestic tours – and several overseas – are competing for top talent.

The language around "signing" created a lot of noise in the pickleball world. Fans and analysts were trying to figure out if this meant QD was locked into the APP exclusively. But that's not what happened, at least not in QD's case.

We can't speak directly to the dozens of other pro signings announced by the APP this week.

The Anatomy of the Deal

According to Duc, QD's deal with the APP locks him in to four events this season. That's it. And it's not exclusive, either; QD is free to play others events offered by other tours.

In fact, he's already announced he'll be playing four events this year at a tour in Malaysia, the Pickleball D-Joy Tour 2026.

The non-exclusive nature of the APP deal means QD could also, theoretically, compete in PPA events if the right opportunity came along. But that would involve other factors from both sides.

Is Quang Duong Returning to the PPA Tour?
“In order to be the best, you’ve got to play on the PPA Tour. And QD wants to be the best.”
