One is muted and more forgiving, the other is crisper and poppier. Like all paddles, it comes down to feel and player preference.
As foam-core pickleball paddles continue to evolve, two materials are increasingly at the center of the conversation: EPP and MPP.
While they may sound similar, they deliver very different performance profiles on the court.
Thankfully, two experts, Louis and Justin from the Pickleball Pursuit podcast, broke down the difference in a recent episode, focusing specifically on the new Turbo paddles from Enhance Pickleball.
- EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) is known for its lightweight, highly resilient structure. It’s a flexible foam that compresses and rebounds quickly, giving paddles a softer, more controlled feel.
As described in the segment, EPP has more of a “muted, dampened feel” and is “a little bit more forgiving” on contact. That translates to better touch, easier resets, and less vibration—traits that control-oriented players tend to prioritize.

- MPP (Modified Polypropylene), by contrast, is engineered to be denser and more rigid. That added firmness creates a more explosive response.
In the video, MPP is described as “more poppy” with a “crisper, more responsive feel” off the face. The result is greater energy return, making it better suited for players who want extra pace on drives and putaways.
In simple terms:
- EPP = softer, quieter, more control-oriented
- MPP = firmer, livelier, more power-driven
As foam technology pushes forward, the choice between EPP and MPP ultimately comes down to feel.
Do you want something plush and forgiving or something sharp and explosive?
