Former Bond Villain Finds New Foe in Florida Pickleball Courts

by Alex E. Weaver on

Stop us if you've heard this one before: Residents of an upscale neighborhood are in an uproar over a proposed pickleball court installation, fearing the noise will shatter the peace and tranquility of nearby homes.

It's a story as old as time. This version takes place in Apollo Beach, Florida, where the homeowners association's plans to convert existing tennis courts into a pickleball facility have been met with considerable pushback, and even a lawsuit filed on August 15, according to the Daily Mail.

At the heart of the lawsuit: Robert Davi (picture above, right), an actor with major roles in movies from "The Goonies" to "Die Hard" to "Inside Man."

He also famously portrayed Franz Sanchez, the villain to Timothy Dalton's James Bond in 1989's "License to Kill."

The lawsuit reportedly contends "the closeness of homes to the courts would be subjected to constant noise from the constant 'pong' sound of generated by the balls hitting the paddle during gameplay, which often begins at dawn and can continue for hours."

Davi appeared before the Hillsborough County Commission to plead his case, mimicking the familiar "pong, pong, pong" of a ball hitting a paddle, saying:

"I could spend three minutes doing that. Would you like that next to your community? We need you guys to step up. We need you to really put in an ordinance."

He's been vocal about it to his 280,000 followers on X, as well.

Davi's opposition isn't to the sport itself, it seems, but to the location of these particular courts. Other residents voiced similar concerns.

"This tennis court pickleball initiative is basically turning your neighbors, into your enemies, said one resident who lives nearby.

"My concern is the acoustics associated with the game. My concern about it is the hours that they will be allowed to play that sport. It’s early morning into the night."
