5 Pickleball Myths Keeping You Stuck at 3.5

by The Dink Media Team on

Advanced pickleball means developing the awareness to make decisions based on what's actually happening on the court, not on general rules that sound good in theory

You've probably heard some pretty confident advice at your local pickleball court. Hit harder. Always take balls out of the air. Play it safe with crosscourt shots. Soft hands are just something you're born with. The kitchen is your safety zone. Blah, blah, blah...

But here's the thing: a lot of that rec-play wisdom is actually holding you back, especially if you're stuck at the 3.5 level and wondering why your game isn't progressing.

The Myths That Keep You Stuck

According to Cori Elliott, five major myths sound right but actually backfire when you're trying to level up your game.

The problem isn't that these ideas are completely wrong. It's that they're presented as universal rules when they're really context-dependent. Pickleball isn't black and white, and neither should your strategy be.

Myth #1: Hit Everything Hard

This one seems obvious, right? More power equals more winners. Except it doesn't work that way.

When you're focused on hitting hard, you're often sacrificing control and court positioning. You'll end up losing more points than you win because you're forcing shots that should be set up differently. The goal isn't to hit the hardest ball; it's to hit the right ball at the right time.

Myth #2: Always Take Balls Out of the Air

Volleying is a key skill in pickleball, and there's definitely value in being aggressive at the net. But not every ball should be attacked mid-air.

If you're off balance when the ball comes to you, taking it out of the air is a recipe for a weak return or an error. Sometimes the smarter play is to let the ball bounce, reset your feet, and hit from a stable position. Patience beats aggression when you're out of position.

Myth #3: Crosscourt Is Always the Safest Shot

Crosscourt shots do travel a longer distance, which theoretically gives you more margin for error. But that advantage disappears if your opponent is already leaning that direction.

If they're anticipating a crosscourt shot, you're hitting directly into their strength. Reading your opponent's positioning matters more than following a blanket rule about shot direction.

Myth #4: Soft Hands Are Natural

Some players seem to have a magical touch at the net, absorbing pace and dropping soft shots with ease. You might think that's just natural talent.

It's not. Soft hands are a trained skill, not an innate ability. They develop through repetition, feel, and intentional practice. If you're not working on touch and control, you're leaving a huge part of your game underdeveloped.

Myth #5: The Kitchen Means Safety

The kitchen (the no-volley zone) is definitely important in pickleball strategy. But being in the kitchen doesn't automatically mean you're safe.

You're only truly safe if you can control the pattern of play. If you're in the kitchen but hitting weak, predictable shots, your opponent will punish you. Kitchen positioning is just one piece of the puzzle.

Context Is Everything

The real lesson here is that pickleball strategy lives in the gray area. Some of these myths contain kernels of truth, but they need to be applied thoughtfully based on the specific situation you're facing.

Are you hitting hard because it's the right shot, or because you're defaulting to power? Are you taking a ball out of the air because you're in control, or because you're reacting without thinking? Are you playing crosscourt because it's the smart play, or because you heard it was safe?

Breaking free from these myths means developing the awareness to make decisions based on what's actually happening in the match, not on general rules that sound good in theory.
