4 Essential Footwork Tips Every Senior Pickleball Player Must Master

by The Dink Media Team on

Smarter positioning and simple footwork adjustments can help senior pickleball players improve performance without relying on speed

If you've been playing pickleball for a while, you know the feeling: you're moving around the court, but something feels off. Maybe you're getting tired faster than your opponents. Maybe you're not in position when the ball comes back. Maybe your joints are taking a beating.

The good news? You don't need to move faster to play better. You just need to move smarter.

That's exactly what Mark Johnson, a 63-year-old pickleball player with seven years of experience, breaks down in a recent lesson from the Cliff Pickleball YouTube channel.

His four essential steps for senior players show how positioning and footwork can transform your game without wearing out your body.

1. Position Yourself for the Return of Serve

Most players stand in the middle of the service box when returning serve, but Johnson suggests a smarter approach.

If your forehand is your stronger stroke (and let's be honest, it usually is), step one or two steps to the left before the serve comes in. This simple adjustment means you'll hit way more forehands and way fewer backhands.

Sure, you'll leave some space open on the other side, but the trade-off is worth it. You're playing to your strength, not fighting against it.

2. Master the Split Step on Your Way to the Kitchen

Here's where a lot of seniors get into trouble: they try to sprint all the way to the kitchen line and end up out of position when the next shot comes.

Johnson's solution is the split step, a small jump or forward step that gets you balanced and ready before your opponent hits the ball. You don't have to reach the kitchen in one go.

Instead, move forward, stop, get set, hit your shot, then move up again. It's a rhythm that keeps you in control and prepared, which matters way more than being at the line unprepared.

3. Take One Step Back for Low Dinks

When the ball bounces close to your feet at the kitchen line, flexibility becomes your enemy. Instead of trying to reach down and contort your body, take one step back, keep your paddle in front of you, and hit the dink from a more comfortable position.

Then step back in. Johnson emphasizes this works the same way on both forehand and backhand. It's easier on your joints, gives you better contact, and keeps you in the point. That's a win across the board.

4. Adjust Your Position When Lobs Are Coming

Senior pickleball features a lot of lobs, and they can be deadly if you're caught too close to the net.

When you notice your opponent is lobbing effectively, take a step back from the kitchen line during the dinking phase.

This gives you more time and space to chase down the lob. Yes, you're giving up some net position, but you're also preventing those lobs from sailing over your head untouched. It's a tactical adjustment that acknowledges the reality of your game.

The Bigger Picture: Move Smart, Not Fast

What ties all four steps together is a simple philosophy: positioning beats speed. You can't outrun a 25-year-old, and you shouldn't try.

But you can be in the right spot at the right time. You can anticipate where the ball is going. You can set yourself up for success before the shot even comes. That's what these steps teach.

They're not flashy, and they won't make highlight reels, but they'll make you a better, more durable player. And after 50, 60, or 70 years on the planet, durability matters just as much as skill.
